Shape of Medical Training
The development of a reformed postgraduate training pathway for
doctors is one of Medical Education England's core purposes. The
work builds on Professor Sir John Tooke's report Aspiring to Excellence,
which highlighted a number of issues that MEE should address
in this area including:
- the need for clear, shared principles for postgraduate medical
training that emphasise flexibility and an aspiration to
excellence;
- consensus on the role of doctors at various stages of their
careers including CCT holders and the service contribution of
trainees; and
- modifying the structure of postgraduate training to provide a
broad-based platform, increased flexibility, the valuing of
experience and the promotion of excellence
Taking forward the vision for workforce planning, education and
training outlined in the Next Stage Review, the Shape of
Training programme aims to ensure the provision of future training
pathways based on the principle that high quality patient care and
improved outcomes require the provision of high quality education
and training.
